Just another low blow to the female community about self image. Nothing outlandish but it gets the idea across. I do enjoy advertisements but only because I don't take in the shit message they're trying to get out, i see them as another art form because it has many levels to it. They all just want you to buy the items they're selling, and maybe the best way they can accomplish that is to make you think you can't live without it. Maybe your skin is aging and you want to feel "pretty" again, so you buy this make up that says it can defy age. Thats how the system works. You feel like shit about your self image, you see an add saying their item can make you feel better, so in all desperation you buy said item. Maybe you realize that once you have it you don't actually need it and you made a mistake by buying it, but that isn't the point, you already bought it. You abided by their rules and caved into the consumerism.
Heather, I also see advertisements as an art form. I think many of them are clever and use a level of sophistication to send a message. I like to break them down and think about them, but other times I just enjoy the colors, the composition and the cleverness. There's a lot that is bad in the industry, though, like you say here. That's especially true when young people use what they see in ads as a way to measure their self-worth, especially since everything in an ad is just a carefully crafted image...not reality.
